ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) raised flags in Al-Naeem square in Islamic State's former capital of Raqqa, video uploaded on Monday (October 16) by Kurdish news agency ANHA showed. A Reuters witness said the SDF raised a militia flag inside Raqqa stadium on Tuesday (October 17). The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said Islamic State has now been completely cleared from the city. The fall of Raqqa city, where Islamic State staged euphoric parades after its string of lightning victories in 2014, is a potent symbol of the jihadist movement's reversal of fortune. From the city, the group planned attacks abroad. The SDF, backed by a U.S.-led international alliance, has been fighting Islamic State inside Raqqa since June.
