After speculation that President Trump would block the release of thousands of documents surrounding President John F. Kennedy's assassination, Trump tweeted that he would allow the files to be opened, writing, quote: "Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened." More than 50 years after the assassination, the deadline for the federal government to release the files is October 26, 2017 - according to the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992. The act only allows one PERSON to stop the release, the president. And only if he decides that it would endanger national security. According to Politico, Trump has been under pressure from the CIA to block the release in order to protect the agency's tactics and the identity of informants who might still be alive. Full release would mark a significant step for researchers, who have waited decades to get access to all the available information.
