A severe storm pounded the U.S. northeast into Monday morning, bringing with it lashing winds and heavy rains. Nathan Frandino reports.

A severe storm struck the U.S. northeast overnight, bringing down power lines and sending trees crashing into homes and cars. Wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour were reported in some parts, including the Boston area. The storm began Sunday, driving up rough surf all along the coast. In Kearny, New Jersey, a mother and son had to be rescued after being trapped in rising floodwaters. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CAROL SCHEMENTI, RESIDENT, SAYING: "We went to Seaton Hall prep for open house my son for high school and they didn't shut the road down and I came through and i didn't make it. It shut down - the whole car." The storm was expected to continue moving across the northeast into Monday afternoons, with up to 10 inches of rain forecast.
