Fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad made history in Rio last year as the first U.S. Olympian to represent her country wearing a hijab. Now there's a Barbie that looks just like her. In a twitter post the athlete cheered the move saying (Screenshot): "I'm proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true." The scarf-wearing doll from Barbie's maker Mattel comes as The Hijab - one of the most visible signs of Islamic culture - is going mainstream in the West--Designers have embraced it on catwalks, magazine covers now featuring Hijabi models and Apple recently launched this emoji character. In recent years--Barbie has been releasing more racially diverse and curvier dolls -moving away from its classic stick-thin blonde haired models. The hijab-wearing Barbie is part of the new "Shero" line, which recognizes women "who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls," and will go on sale in 2018.
