French vote may show populists stalling

Posted

Centrist Emmanuel Macron and far right Marine Le Pen came top in the first round of France's election Sunday - with one of them guaranteed to win a run-off on May 7. Reuters' Noah Barkin says that although Macron is favourite to win, controversial Le Pen could still beat him - although it would be by a very narrow margin. If she doesn't manage to win, it could mark a decline in populism across Europe - in a continent which has already rejected the idea in several other elections.
