Clams return to Sicily after 30 year absence

Posted

A Sicilian co-operative has brought back native clams and mussels to Lake Ganzirri, after combating pollution levels that had caused a 30 year absence of the molluscs. The lake is part of a brackish system consisting of two basins that have narrow channels running through to the Ionian Sea causing seasonal changes particularly in salinity and temperature. The shallower parts of the lake tend to have greater salinity and these are the areas the clam fishermen work where they can stand on the sandy bottom. To preserve the water, traditional fishing methods are being used. The return of the clams, has also meant young unemployed Italians now have jobs.
